Pure VS Sterling Silver

What’s the difference?


Visually, Sterling Silver pretty much looks the same as pure Silver, especially if the alloy contains Copper. But other than appearance, the two do have some differences. Read on to learn more


1. PRICE

Pure silver is very expensive!

Pure Silver is usually more expensive than Sterling Silver. However, because the two looks the same, it is more economical for consumers to purchase the alloy.



2. WEARABILITY

Pure silver is very soft!

Pure Silver is softer and more malleable than Sterling Silver. This however, does not make it practical for jewelry which is usually worn daily.



3. OXIDATION

Pure Silver isn't easily oxidised!

Pure Silver rarely tarnishes since it does not react to Oxygen or water, unlike Sterling Silver which is more prone to tarnishing following prolonged exposure to same.



4. MAINTENANCE

Pure Silver is easier to maintain!

Pure Silver requires very little maintenance to keep its pristine look, where as Sterling Silver requires more care to keep it looking like new.


Despite these differences, Sterling Silver is still way more popular among consumers than pure Silver, and really, THAT is really what matters, right?!
